The type of application expected by a personnel department can vary from one country to the next.

In Germany, a written job application should always contain the following documents in the following order:

  • Cover letter
  • Photograph
  • Resume
  • Diplomas and certificates 

If you apply with the traditional paper form, all documents should be printed on pure white, high quality paper, absolutely clean and without creases. In detail:

1. Cover letter

This is the most important document in your application because it creates a direct link between you and your desired employment and the advertised position. Tips in a nutshell: only 1-sheet presentation - precise statements in error-free, concise German - short sentences - clear sheet division.

2. Photo

A current, professional photo should be used here, which should be placed on the top right of the resume.
